We had 16 competitors show up (5 Piston and 11 Pre-charge) at the Morro Bay Airgunners 2nd Anniversary Field Target match. We are now in our 3rd year of hosting field target matches on the Central Coast. Temperatures were cool but many of us still chose to camp at the range. I arrived Saturday at the range around noon and a few eager competitors were already there waiting to site their rifles in for the next days match. By the time I got the BBQ fired up, we had about a dozen early arrivals who were ready to eat. We did a little more sighting in after dinner as the winds calmed down enough for me to get a decent zero dialed in. We had competitors from Oregon, and all over California including Sacramento, SF Bay area, and the LA area.

Reveille (revelry?) sounded at 6am Sunday morning. We had overcast skies and cool temps (cool by our standards). Winds were calm and initial scores were looking good as we progressed through the lanes. A few of us were shooting 12fpe and keeping our fingers crossed for the calm winds. Alan was one of the 12fpe shooters and was like the "canary in the coal mine" for any faulty targets. He utilized the protest procedure three times and each time the target failed the 4fpe test and had to be corrected. He got to re-shoot each replaced target to earn his points. The sun came out around 10am and winds slowly picked up. By the end of the match, the winds were probably averaging 8-12mph with occasional lulls which some tried to take advantage of. I saw some amazing shots on the far lane 12 target (no wind protection). I saw one shooter take it down 2x, as their final target, in the worst winds of the day.

In the end, the far targets combined with the winds made for a tough course. Art Burciaga was the high Piston shooter with a fantastic 35/48. And Ronnie Easton was the Pre-charge champ with the overall match high score of 39/48. Wayne Burns was close behind with a 38/48.
